Labeling Challenges of the Global Chemical Industry
The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS)
The GHS is a system for standardizing and harmonizing the classification and labelling of chemicals. It is a logical and comprehensive approach to:
- Defining health, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals.
- Creating classification processes that use available data on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria.
- Communicating hazard information, as well as protective measures, on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

HCS/GHS Labeling Components
1- Product identifier
chemical name or number to identify the chemical.
2- Signal Word
Alerts level of severity of hazard
3- Hazard Statement
Recommended the nature of hazard (s) associated with a chemical
4- Precautionary Statement
recommended measures to take to prevent adverse effects
5- Supplier identification
Name address and telephone number of the chemical manufacturer importer or other responsible party.
6- First Aid Statement
Emergency care information
7- Pictograms
Conveys specific information about the hazard (s) of a chemical
