When labeling a product or service, it is important to consider certain technical aspects in order to avoid any issues. Below is a brief description of the most important factors to be taken into account when tagging a product.

Self-adhesive labels are essentially made up of a facestock, an adhesive, a liner, and a topcoat. For each of these four elements we can find different alternatives that will be utilized and combined depending on their function.

Typically, self-adhesive labels are made up of different elements as seen in the diagram shown below.

They are also used to protect the print, either by giving durability to the label, aid the printed material, or to allow the label to be reprinted. Topcoats of great use are glossy, mate, printable varnishes, UV type or transparent BOPP, and polyester films.

The inkprinted ink gets placed between the topcoat and the facestock. Printing can be done through different processes such as digital, offset, silkscreen, and flexographic.

 

face-stockFacestock Papers and films are the most common facestocks, meaning the visible side of the label. Other paper types that are used are semi-gloss or high gloss finish, silver or gold foil coated, and thermal transfer papers. The main films used are indoor white BOPP, outdoor white vinyl, water resistant clear film, silver polyester, white polyesters, tamper evident void, and destructible labels.

Adhesives There are a wide variety of adhesives with specific uses. These adhesives range from permanent, removable, removable & repositionable, clear permanent, and VOID tamper-evident adhesive.

 

linerLiner The silicone paper or film that holds the label for its use is known as a liner. These will vary according to the type of adhesive as well as the labels function and application, whether it is manual or automatic. The most common liners are glassine white or yellow papers and its thickness can be of 64 g/m or 80 g/m. Some films are also used as support, particularly with high speed labeling process.

logo_petComposition This relates to the surface type. The general rule is that the bigger the surface energy the higher the bond strength. The elements of high surface energy, where labels adhere easily, are PET, glass and metals. On the other side, we find that polyethylene LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) is for using on low-energy surfaces with lesser grip.

ambienteEnvironmental Conditions Labels will need to be evaluated if they will be used for indoors or outdoors. Their resistance to different temperatures and conditions must also be assessed.

forma-envaseShape and texture The specific type of label used will depend upon shape and texture of the product’s containers. For example, label types will vary if the container is smooth, waved, painted, corrugated, opaque, or bright.

Expected usage There will be an expected usage of the labels. For example, a label used for fast food will not be the same as a label used for a fire extinguisher or a product with a three year warranty.
